They say friendship lays the strongest foundation, and for Lexi and Jacob, it led to a wedding day that was completely their own. Filled with special family moments, timeless black-and-white details, and thoughtful touches, their celebration was a beautiful reflection of a love story years in the making.
The couple first met while living on the same floor during their freshman year of college. They spent the next three years as best friends before their relationship became something more, building a connection that would carry them into the next chapter.
During a day with friends at the Sunflower Experience in Belle Plaine, Jacob found the perfect moment to pop the question. Waiting around the corner of a path through the sunflowers, he got down on one knee and asked Lexi to marry him. Earlier that week, Lexi had started to suspect a proposal was coming, so she came prepared with a fresh manicure, a new dress, and a blowout. Even with her suspicions, the moment was still unforgettable as she said “yes” surrounded by sunflowers.
When it came to planning their wedding day, they gravitated toward a style that would stand the test of time. A classic black-and-white palette paired with loose, garden-inspired florals created an elegant atmosphere at Ashton Hill Farm in Cedar Rapids without feeling overly formal.
With the help of Borrow My Vintage and Studio Bloom, Lexi’s Pinterest inspiration came to life. One special floral touch that gave a natural, organic vibe was to create unique arrangements for each centerpiece instead of perfectly matching each arrangement.
Their day was filled with meaningful details and captured beautifully by Slightly Greyy Photo. The couple says the photographer was a standout vendor, delivering stunning images that perfectly preserved the memories of the day.
With a big bridal party including 10 bridesmaids and 10 groomsmen, four flower girls and two ring bearers, Lexi and Jacob were surrounded with the people who had supported them throughout their journey. We loved the fresh take on tradition as the bridesmaids wore elegant white gowns, creating a modern and sophisticated look.
One of the reception’s most emotional moments came during the father-daughter dance, when Lexi’s cousin, Riley Smith, performed a live cover of Post Malone’s “Yours.” It was one of Lexi’s favorite memories of the day.
While bringing their vision to life was one of the most exciting parts of the process, Lexi shares that planning required plenty of time and attention to detail. She poured herself into every decision – from visiting 13 bridal boutiques and sampling four caterers to making the drive from Cedar Rapids to Davenport for makeup trials. Through it all, day of coordinator Megan (MJ) Colby helped everything come together seamlessly, allowing the couple to fully enjoy their celebration.
Looking back, Lexi hopes other couples remember the same lesson she learned throughout the planning process: “Everything always works out in the end, so try not to sweat the small stuff.”
